NTS Rider Instructions
Are you new to NTS?
Create your NTS account – you only need to do this the first time. Choose which way works best for you:
On your mobile device:
- Download and install the NTS Mobile App. It can be found by searching the app store for “NTS Horizons”.
- Follow the prompts to create your account.
- Locate Payment Methods in the menu and add a bank or credit card to your account. You must have a payment method or ride credits on your account to schedule rides.
On a computer:
- Go to https://horizons.app.ridewithvia.com.
- Click “Don’t have an account yet?”.
- Follow the prompts to create your account.
- Locate Payment Methods in the menu and add a bank or credit card to your account. You must have a payment method or ride credits on your account to schedule rides.
Call the NTS office:
- Call our office at (319) 363-1321 during business hours.
- NTS staff will create your account for you.
- You will need to give them your bank or credit card number and 1) they will add it to your account or 2) they will charge your card for ride credits and add the ride credits to your account. You determine the quantity of ride credits you wish to purchase. You must have a payment method or ride credits on your account to schedule rides.
Visit the NTS office:
- Visit our office at Horizons Family Services, 819 5th St SE, Cedar Rapids during business hours.
- NTS staff will create your account for you.
- You will need to give them your bank or credit card number and 1) they will add it to your account or 2) they will charge you for ride credits and add the ride credits to your account. You determine the quantity of ride credits you wish to purchase. You must have a payment method or ride credits on your account to schedule rides.
Please note:
- If you require a wheelchair accessible vehicle, please note that on your account.
- Please keep your phone number and your method of payment current on your account.
Are you ready to schedule a ride with us?
Schedule a ride with us by choosing which way works best for you:
WARNING – Book your ride carefully or you may arrive at your drop-off destination too late or be picked up from your pick-up location too early.
On your mobile device:
- Open the NTS mobile app.
- Click Where to?
- Confirm My Location (where we will pick you up).
- Enter My Destination (where we will take you).
- Going to work or training? – Proceed to Going to work or training.
Leaving work or training? – Proceed to Leaving work or training.
On a computer:
- Confirm My Location (where we will pick you up).
- Enter My Destination (where we will take you).
- Select your Travel reason.
- Enter Location comments (if you have instructions for the driver).
- Going to work or training? – Proceed to Going to work or training.
Leaving work or training? – Proceed to Leaving work or training.
Call or visit the NTS office during business hours:
- Tell us about the ride you want to schedule and we will be happy to help you. Write down pick-up window for each day booked.
- Get picked up at your location and travel safely with NTS – that’s it!
Going to work or training
- Click Arrive by:
- Choose a Date and a Time when you need to be dropped off at work or training. If there are no seats available, you may want to adjust your time to see if your new time is available.
- Scroll down to choose your 30-minute pick up window. Write down pick-up window for each day booked.
- Watch for confirmation when your trip is booked.
- Get picked up at your location and travel safely with NTS – that’s it!
Leaving work or training
- Click Depart at:
- Choose a Date and a Time when you need to be picked up from work or training. If there are no seats available, you may want to adjust your time to see if your new time is available.
- Scroll down to choose your 30-minute pick up window. Write down pick-up window for each day booked.
- Watch for confirmation when your trip is booked.
- Get picked up at your location and travel safely with NTS – that’s it!
Rider Rules & Guidelines
- Eating, drinking, smoking, alcohol, drug use, and firearms are prohibited. We will not pick up riders who are intoxicated.
- Rides can be booked up to 13 days in advance.
- Pre-purchased ride credits will be deducted from your account, or your bank/credit card will be charged each time you ride.
- Drivers cannot accept payment on the vehicle.
- Please do not tip the driver.
- Pick-up and drop-off locations are limited to the city limits of Cedar Rapids / Marion / Hiawatha.
- Refer to our Hours of Operation for days and times our transportation service can be requested.
- Be ready to board at any time during your 30-minute pickup window.
- You will receive a text when your vehicle is on the way and again when it arrives.
- You may track the vehicle within the app, but the pick-up time you receive in the text message will vary slightly.
- You have 2 minutes to board the vehicle between the time it arrives and before it leaves your location. This is necessary to pick up and drop off all riders on this route on their scheduled times.
- Due to unexpected traffic conditions, trains, or inclement weather, pick-up times can potentially fall behind schedule. Please be patient.
- To ensure ride availability, we encourage you to book your ride as far in advance as possible, however, same day ride scheduling may still be available.
- If you no longer need a previously scheduled ride, please cancel your ride as soon as you know you don’t need it. This allows other riders to schedule their ride. Failure to cancel a ride you won’t be using will be recorded as “no-show”.
- Your ride must be cancelled at least 2 hours in advance of your pick-up window or your ride will be recorded as “no-show”.
- Riders that have more than 5 cancellations or 2 “no-shows” in the same month may be restricted from riding NTS until they call or visit the NTS office to reactivate their account. Reactivations are at the discretion of the NTS Staff.
Changing or canceling a scheduled ride?
On your mobile device or computer:
- Locate Scheduled Rides in the menu.
- Select the date your ride is scheduled that you want to change or cancel.
- Select the Edit button to make necessary changes to your scheduled ride or select the Cancel button to cancel your ride.
Call or visit our office during business hours:
- Tell us about the ride you want to change or cancel and we will be happy to help you.
Please note:
- When making changes to a scheduled ride, only the pick-up time / drop-off time can be changed. The time can only be changed if there is availability for the new time. If there is no availability for the new time, you should consider canceling your ride if it does not work for you.
- Your ride must be cancelled at least 2 hours in advance of your pick-up window or your ride will be recorded as “no-show”.
- Rides recorded as “no-show” will result in loss of paid fare for that ride.
- Riders that have more than 5 cancellations or 2 “no-shows” in the same month may be restricted from riding NTS until they call or visit the NTS office to reactivate their account. Reactivations are at the discretion of the NTS Staff.
Setting your favorite locations
- Locate Favorites in the menu.
- Enter the location of your home, work, school, or training.
- Set your location.
- Repeat as necessary to save multiple locations.
Locations & Hours of Operation
NTS provides service everywhere within the city limits of Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha.
NTS vans operate during the night and weekend hours:
Weekdays
2:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.
7:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Saturdays
5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
5:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Sundays
5:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
NTS does not provide service on the following Holidays:

Book a group shuttle for your organization’s next event and help support NTS.
- Group shuttles available 24/7!
- Must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance
- Wheelchair accessible vehicles available.
- Transportation available outside of Linn County.

Thank you for your interest in a group event shuttle! Every shuttle helps support NTS getting people to work at night when public transportation is not available.
Please tell us as much about the group event as you can at this time and submit your request. We will follow-up with you the first business day after receiving your request.
